Now it's less than two weeks until my marathon! The question I keep getting is: how's the form?
Well, I don't know. Of course, I wish it were better! I haven’t really managed to lift it at the end, and it almost feels like I’ve gone backwards!? I’ve run 880 km and 77 hours this year. Maybe that’s too little to really get a good marathon time after all.
At the end of August, the week before Höga Kusten, I probably had my best form – but it hasn’t improved during the autumn. Maybe the volume has been too low to get that boost?
Let me present some data before continuing my reasoning.
Here are a few key sessions with pace and heart rate:
- Aug 4, 27 km, 4:57 min/km, 147 avg HR
- Aug 23, 31 km, 4:34 min/km, 152 avg HR
- Sept 7, 5 km (interval during distance run), 4:18 min/km, 153 avg HR
- Sept 20, 15 km (interval during distance run), 4:25 min/km, 162 avg HR
- Oct 5, 30 km, 5:05 min/km, 150 avg HR
- Oct 11, 20 km (interval during distance run), 4:28 min/km, 161 avg HR
I made a simple visualization of this data. Well, I asked AI to create it.
You can see that on Aug 23 and Sept 7, I was in a really good spot with low heart rate relative to pace. Now toward the end, the heart rate is a bit higher (above the red trend line). Compare Oct 5 with Aug 23. I had 1–2 beats higher HR on the 23rd, but the pace was 4:35 instead of 5:05! Aug 23 had perfect running weather – cool enough for gloves but still T-shirt weather.
I’ve been thinking about why. After Höga Kusten, I focused more on cycling for two weeks because there were bike races coming up! That went well and I won at WMR. Then we went to Greece. Training was poor there, but I still managed three runs, so it should’ve held off the decline. After Greece, I felt sluggish and couldn’t train hard for a week. So I wonder if this combo – first cycling focus, then Greece with less training, and then a bit of a cold – this 4–5 week period might have dulled my running form.
This marathon is a bit special, with a picture of the “course” below. So it’s not like you can run your fastest marathon here. But of course, I want to leave everything down in the mine! Nothing should be left!
The balance is: how hard can I push myself without totally collapsing? I’m almost more worried that I’ll be TOO cautious and defensive, making excuses like “it’s not a race,” “it’s a shared event,” blah blah blah. I’ll have to live with the time – so of course I need to give it everything.
I think from now until race day, the main thing is to keep the body and legs going, and then find the right mindset that’s ready to push hard from the start. After 10 km, it should feel tough – otherwise you’re probably running too slowly?
4:30 pace like I ran for 20 km last Saturday is tough, but there’s nothing saying I have to stop after 20 km. But how will it feel at 35 km?
